Sausalito Dinnerware-Amber

Our Sausalito Dinnerware is a longstanding favorite. Made of dense, heavy earthenware, these generously sized pieces are the ultimate basic for everyday dining. Each piece is glazed by hand and has visible brush strokes. 16-piece set includes 4 dinner plates, 4 salad plates, 4 cereal bowls and 4 mugs. Available in a wide assortment of colors designed to mix and match. Earthenware's porousness makes it readily absorb heat, so while dishes are microwave-safe, they may become hot. Handle carefully. Please take special care when microwaving liquids; hot liquids will transfer their heat to the container. Store / Internet Only.

MY FAVORITE DINNERWARE
August 15, 2012
10 years ago I registered for this set in amber & all I received was the serving dish. 10 years later I decided to purchase not only the amber but the celery & white also. I got 5 place settings of each. These plates don't chip & last a long time. I use the soup bowl as a pasta bowl. I have a family of 5 & when I have dinner w/another couple & their kids, I have enough place settings for all. The colors are beautiful & can be used for Thanksgiving dinner or a spring function. I wish all the other colors were available for purchase because I would get place settings for those as well.

Disappointed
July 9, 2012
These dishes are gorgeous! But four days after receiving them one plate already chipped when I was putting them in the cupboard! I am very disappointed in the lack of quality. It has been down hill since. They are unbelievably fragile!

Tuscan not
November 2, 2011
The glaze was a different color than in the photo. Also, the plates are quite large with a wide angled rim so they didn't fit in the cupboard, but they would be ideal for my Tuscan farm house. The chunky style mugs are just the right size for Fred Flintstone. Unfortunately I have neither a Tuscan farm house and am not related to Fred, so I had to send them all back.

My New Dishes
September 8, 2011
LOVE! I just installed espresso hardwood floors, with that came a new table, new glasses...and of course NEW DISHES. These dishes are amazing, i was worried at first because they are thicker than id imagined, but they are not as heavy as they look and VERY durable. They are very nice quality as to be expected from Pottery Barn, LOVE!

Regrets
March 11, 2011
I wish I would've read the reviews before I bought this set of dishes as it seems others have had the same problems. The dishes are beautiful, but started chipping within a year or two. Also, even though they say "microwave safe," doesn't mean they microwave well. The mugs, and sometimes the plates, get so hot you can't even touch them and the food will still be cold. I did know the dish-set was large in size, but they are inconvenient for most cabinets and take up dishwasher space quickly. Overall, they are far too expensive for the qualilty and I wish I would have chosen different dishes.

Well...
January 30, 2011
We have had these dishes (in navy blue) for 9 years and a few months...since we got married. I loved them at the time that I registered for them! Unfortunately we have never liked owning them. To start, the actual dinner plates do not even fit in our cabinets much less the dishwasher so we have never ever used them (they still have the stickers on them). Secondly, when you put them in the microwave even for 30 seconds, they are so hot, you can not get them out and are awkward to retrieve because of their weight. And to end, after owning them for about a year or two, they began to crack and break pretty badly. I was looking to maybe replace the ones that have "died" but am thinking at this point, I'm just going to start over with new...but not Sausalito!

Fabulous!
January 8, 2011
Love the set, and added serving pieces. Love the glaze, had them over a year and no chips. Wash in dishwasher, microwave, no brainer. Lovely color. Dishes and cups are oversized, I like that. I can use them in setting up a layered place setting, mix and match with my smaller sized set. They do fit in my dishwasher, no prob.
Can't say enough about these dishes, have a designer set cost 3x as much and it chipped, etc, not nearly as substantial as these dishes.
If you want the large sized, microwavable, dishwasher dishes with a classy look, These are great.

LOVE THESE
December 31, 2010
We have had Sausalito for 10 years...never a chip...never a crack...I do not wash the plates in the dishwasher because they are large and do not fit securely in either of the two dishwashers we have had...we love the diverse colors that have been available over the years...

Chips and scratches easily
December 17, 2010
We've had these now for 5 years and they started chipping badly after 2 years. The dinner plates are impressive but not practical given they hold little food for their size (and don't fit in the dishwasher). We also have lots of grey scratches on our white plates that makes them not great to serve. Sad that we'll be will be changing these out because we were really excited when we registered for them.

sausalito dinner wear
November 17, 2010
When we bought these dishes we were very excited. Little did we know just one bump in the sink they would chip and actually crack. I was actually burned by a mug taking it out of the microwave. Very disappointed with the quality especially after the price we paid for them. We are now down to two salad plates and 2 mugs because they break so easily!

Don't get fooled by the look of them
November 13, 2010
I have had these dishes for less than a year and a half now and really can't wait to replace them. Due to their size the dinner plates are definitely not pricatical. They do not fit in a regular dish cabinet so I had to put them on my lazy susan which is used for pots and pans. They also do not fit in my dishwasher. We usually end up using the salad plates for all meals but because of the limited flat surface on them it is hard to separate the food. In less than a year a quarter of the dishes were chipped which ruined the beauty of them which is why I bought them. They also get way too hot in the microwave. I have burned myself on a few occassions taking them out of the microwave and in 2 situations the plates actually broke in half so I am now down 2 dishes. I definitely regret picking these dishes and will be buying new ones as soon as I can.

Chip too easily
November 5, 2010
I was so happy to purchase these at first but they are not ideal for everyday use. I have a set for 8 people and half of them are chipped on the edges after 1 1/2 years. The plates are so big that I had to stick them into a drawer because they don't fit on my shelves (my husband was not happy about that). They also get really, really hot in the microwave, sometimes hotter than the food! I just wish they had a higher quality for the price.

Had them for years
October 26, 2010
I have had this set for 10 years, i have 8 each of the big plates, salad plates, soup bowls and pasta bowls, so a total of 32 pieces. out of these, only 1 of the big plates has a chip, and two of the soup bowls. we use the salad plates daily and have no chips. I think these are excellent quality, have held up really well and are beautiful.

steer clear
October 19, 2010
we have had these plates for about 4 years now. These plates are beautiful, but I have several complaints.
1. They chip very easily, and are very unsightly when this happens.
2. The largest plates don't fit in most standard cabinets (too deep)
3. When you use them in the microwave, they get very hot to the touch quickly. I have had many other plates that don't do this, which I would much prefer.
For the price these plates are not worth it. Not at all durable, and not something you would really want to use for years......

beautiful
August 30, 2010
I've been collecting these for over 10 years now, buying new colors as they came out. I now have 22 rim soup bowls and 18 salad plates in a wonderful mix of muted, earthy colors! I use them for family meals and entertaining all year 'round, and always get compliments. The imperfect finish of the glaze, and the handcrafted looking form is what I love most about them. I didn't get the dinner plates because they are huge, and I knew they would never fit in my cabinets or dishwasher, but the salad plates are big enough for most meals. I've not had much trouble with chipping, but I'm pretty careful with them because I like them so much! My 84 year old mother says they are too heavy to lift up into the cabinets, and they do tend to get hot in the microwave when heating up leftovers.

Beautiful, but definitely not worth it
August 18, 2010
The truth is: they're beautiful, but they're horribly unuseful. They make a very nice presentation for the tabletop. People are always complimenting not only the style of these plates, but the color. And I have all the matching pieces for the Sausalito-Amber set, from the butter dish, to all the platters. The only complaint and major problem(and Pottery Barn notes this) is that they chip. Terribly. And quite easily. I've replaced several pieces and they've all chipped terribly too! It's unsightly and I can't use them anymore! I'm extremely disappointed and would highly recomend staying away from this product.

Lovely but very large
August 17, 2010
We've had our Sausalito since around 2001. The only drawback is the enormous size of the dinner plates. We've now moved this set to three different homes, all very new construction with modern day cabinetry, and the plates simply do not fit. They fit best where we are now but the doors still are not closed as flush as they should be. Aside from that inconvenience the plates are just too large for portion control. We find ourselves using the salad plates more often than not but they aren't really flat enough. I wish they'd come out with a smaller dinner plate to match for those of us who love and want to keep this set. I've replaced chipped pieces through the years but all in all it has worn well with daily use. The dishwasher does present a problem with the large dinner plates if you do not lean them properly. I would recommend this set to a friend with a warning about the size of the plates. It is certainly lovely.

Love this dinnerware!
August 4, 2010
I bought this dinnerware about 10 years ago (a set of amber and a set of natural) and am still loving it and have not gotten bored of it at all. I am now reordering a few items that, unfortunately, I chipped (when my daughter was a baby and I was sleepdeprived and therefore a bit uncoordinated). Love the big dinnerplates - luckily they fit in my cabinets...

bright and sunny
July 7, 2010
I was looking for a bright, sunny set of dishes and found it in the Sausalito dinnerware. I use it for everyday, and have even used it for Thanksgiving dinner (the amber color is perfect for fall). The set is sturdy and rather heavy, but looks beautiful at the same time. I matched it with some of the green salad plates for variety. One thing to note, the dinner plates are rather large, and they don't fit into my upper caninets. Overall this set is a good buy.
