Nice looking, functional lamp
September 22, 2011
This lamp is exactly what I wanted in my living room, but I only gave it 4 stars because it was a little bit difficult to put together, and I had to "fudge it" for my needs. The top of my lamp is actually put on backwards, but it is now in the direction I needed it to go and works great! Provides nice reading light over the back of my couch, and the dimmer switch is a great bonus. Not too big and blends right in with my decor. Heavy, solid lamp of good quality.

Nice looking lamp, BUT....
February 3, 2011
Bought this lamp 1 year ago, used everyday (in family room) and the switch died w/in 9 months. Returned to the store for a replacement after being assured that the floor dimmer switch breaking was a "fluke", not a common problem. The second lamp only made it 2 months before the switch "popped" and died. I think the floor dimmer switch is a poor design, very lightweight and may not stand up to multiple daily use. I love the look of the lamp, but I'm very disappointed in the quality. I also agree with others' comments about the levers, and thought the assembly was not easy. As much as I love this lamp, I will return it for a refund as I don't hold out much hope the the next one will last any longer than the first two.

Richly colored Architect lamp
December 31, 2010
If you don't know where you want it precisely, you may be looking at wrong floor lamp.
My specific use is sitting at end of Manhatten Sofa even with back, arched over back. When I need task lighting from sitting on sofa, I simply reach overhead, slide it in position without any adjustment. This is it's strongsuit, IMO. I own 4 floor lamps from PB, and this is the only one that meets this need.
Giving 3 overall stars due to teeth on gears seeming a little light duty, and due to price/value relationship.
Styling, I'd give it a 4 of 5 as I really like the megaphone styled shade, rich gold color against caramel leather, and ability to blend well with my decor that includes Expedition trunk as side table next to it.
Prefer black dimmer color and cord

do not buy this lamp!!!
December 20, 2010
Horrible. I wish I had read the reviews before I bought this. I was intending to buy a different lamp, but when it was not available at my local PB store I decided to give this one a try. it is extremely difficult to adjust and not worth the time or money. This lamp is going straight back tomorrow!

I like this floor lamp-great look, but..
December 18, 2010
...This is a great looking light-heavy base, great finish-dark pewter- a great value for an "architect" looking lamp. I read the other reviews before ordering-the switch is a great dimmer switch which holds up to 100W -I do not mind it on the floor at all-no obstruction for me, but needs to be considered.
The joints do need to be lined up when adjusted, but it doesnt fall apart-it just needs to be done slowly-we do not change very often, so this could be a consideration when purchasing.
If ordering, just make sure those two things work for you-I love how they look and my kids are now reading with them-we never adjust arm.

This lamp should be removed from product line
December 9, 2010
The design of this lamp is so poor that Pottery Barn should not be selling it. It is completely non-functional. Someone did an excellent job of copying an attractive architect's lamp, but they forgot to study how one actually works. Yes, it is very nice looking, but in order to adjust it one must turn various knobs, use both hands, and get the teeth of the gears lined up just right. In order to simply turn it on and off one must search the floor for the switch, which is for some reason not only on the floor, but half way between the lamp base and the plug.
A poorer design would be hard to come up with. Do not buy this lamp. I wish I had read the other reviews before I purchased it. I have already returned it, and was very happy that the local Pottery Barn graciously took it back without my having to dis-assemble it.

Switch Problem
November 4, 2010
Christine, this lamp is a really nifty design. Would it be possible to cut the cord, move the switch higher and put a on longer cord coming out from the switch to the wall plug? Maybe rewiring the lamp is an option? I would consider purchasing this lamp if one didn't have to crawl around on the floor just to turn it on and off.

Questionable Switch Design?
September 7, 2010
We love the look of this lamp but it will not work with our large sectional sofa. The on/off switch is a box on the cord on the floor. To turn the light on, you have to go behind the sofa, which is a more significant problem if it is against a wall. Store personnel indicated that this is a problem with alot of customers and question the design and intention of putting the on/off switch on the floor.
